Monte Bianco Augments in Size from 2005 as Announced by Glaciologists
Recent elaborate GPS measurements conducted on the 16-17th Aug have registered that Mont Blanc numbers 4810.5 meters. Monte-Bianco is veiled by a heavy icecap which has grown by 2 m in precisely two yrs but more suprisingly the mass of the ice and snow has all but doubled up . At least that is according to the scientists.
The mass of ice and snow was computed for the maiden time during 2002. It measured 14500 metres cubed higher than 4750 m. It equaled scarcely 13900 cubic metres in 2003 perhaps due to the heat wave with +ve temperature even at 4900 m elevation. Moreover the ice has almost increased twofold since then and now equals 25000 cubic metres.
Chamonix town’s respected near by weather forecaster Thomas Harper explained the growth in the size of the ice-cap is one of the contrary effects of global warming: Snow has not multiplied overall in the Alpes only with global warming we are having a lot of hotter westerly winds that bring rainfall lower down however in summer this means heavy snowfall that settles at higher altitude than 3600 m altitude thus the amount of the icecap is growing. Counterpoint this to the state of affairs during winter time when the snow crystals are exceedingly cold and are moved by air currents and so do not settle down on the top.
Chamonix Haute Savoie France is not only renowned for Mont-Blanc it is also a world renowned skiing town and climbing centre with many ski deals and self catering chalets to be had. Furthermore at merely one hour from Geneva Switzerland it is unbeatable for a short break.
